Mel Carballo – Talent Acquisition Coordinator in the UK

Meet Mel, our Talent Acquisition Coordinator in the UK. She shares with us what she loves about working in recruitment, and her experiences at Huboo.

What is a typical working day at Huboo like for you?

A typical day at Huboo for me is super varied, interactive, and fun! I talk to a lot of people inside and outside of the business, and I absolutely love working with my talent acquisition team to find new innovative and fun ways to attract the best talent to Huboo!

What did you do before working at Huboo?

I have worked in recruitment for 5 years now. Before working at Huboo I was running the Internal Recruitment function for a small recruitment agency in Bristol.

What attracted you to working at Huboo?

To be honest, I just really loved the look of the company and how new and exciting it all looked. After looking into what Huboo is all about, I felt a strong sense of FOMO as the ship was taking off and I wasn’t on board!!

Outside of work, what are your passions?

I absolutely love the outdoors and enjoy going on hikes and camping trips with my partner. I’m also an active member of the City of Bristol Rowing Club, so I love rowing and train 2-3 times a week for local regattas. Huboo are actually competing in the 2022 Corporate Regatta, with the final on 31st July at Bristol Harbour – I can’t be on the team but I’ll be cheering them on!

What do you love about working at Huboo?

I love everything about this company, to be honest. I love the people, working in a diverse, inclusive environment, and I love being listened to and able to contribute ideas. The growth is exciting and there are tons of development opportunities. We even have our own Huboo radio station which is great, and I definitely enjoy the bar and rooftop terrace!

What skills do you need to be a great Talent Acquisition Coordinator?

You need to be resilient, and quite creative with your ideas on how to implement and improve processes. You need to be able to look at the bigger picture and above all, you need to be good with people and have strong communication skills – especially listening skills. We try to identify people who will be a great fit for our culture, and you can only do that by having good conversations with them.

What’s your favourite movie and why?

My favourite film is Honey with Jessica Alba. I grew up watching that film as I used to love dancing and it inspired me to take up street dancing until the age of 15. I don’t dance anymore, but watching that film always brings back great memories!

What advice would you give someone who is considering working at Huboo?

The advice I would give is just don’t think too much about it and go for it!! The best thing I did was apply for my role at Huboo – I can’t even explain how happy I am now. Throw yourself into it, take it seriously and just be yourself because that’s what will make you stand out from the other applicants.
